12 Month Prescriptions
Prescription Changes - From 1 February 2026, you may be eligible for a 12-month prescription.
From 1 February the prescription laws are changing. This allows GP’s and Nurse Practitioners to prescribe up to 12 months’ worth of medications where appropriate. The duration of your prescription will be based on your medical condition and safety considerations.
Your GP or Nurse Practitioner will decide if it’s safe and appropriate to provide you with a 12-month prescription.
All 12-month prescriptions will require a face-to-face appointments.
12- month prescriptions will only be suitable for a small number of patients who are on certain medications and whose condition is stable and does not require monitoring
If you are currently on more than one medication or if check-ups are more regularly required, blood tests etc, then it is unlikely that you will be eligible for a 12-month prescription. In these cases, shorter intervals (such as 3-month, or 6-month prescriptions) will be more suitable and safer for you. Your GP or Nurse Practitioner will discuss this with you at the time.
Furthermore not all medications are allowed to be prescribed for 12 months as some medicines pose higher risk and require regular monitoring. For example, if you are currently prescribed with controlled drug, you would still be prescribed to a maximum of one month’s supply.
